Douglas Chandor, a portrait artist who painted Eleanor Roosevelt and Queen Elizabeth II, designed and constructed these gardens in 1936 as his private residence.
The garden design combines European formal garden elements with Chinese influences, incorporating water features, decorative walls, and native Texas plant species.
Visitors can access the gardens at 711 West Lee Street in Weatherford from Tuesday through Saturday, with guided tours available by appointment.
The gardens contain a collection of decorative bronze statues, including a recently added life-sized portrait bust of Douglas Chandor by sculptor Michael Pavlovsky.
