Lake Kickapoo, body of water

Lake Kickapoo is an artificial reservoir in Texas spanning roughly 6,000 acres of water. The lake is surrounded by flat, open land and features small islands and rocky points that extend into the water.

The reservoir was created in 1947 when a dam was built across the North Fork of the Little Wichita River. Since then, it has served the city of Wichita Falls as a drinking water supply and has become a popular local recreation destination.

The lake bears the name of the Kickapoo people, a Native American tribe that once inhabited this region. Today, visitors can sense this historical connection while enjoying the quiet, open landscape that surrounds the water.

The reservoir offers a boat ramp and shoreline access points for visitors, along with a fishing barge available for a small fee. The water is often murky with limited visibility, so check conditions and follow local safety rules before entering.

The lake is known for its catfish populations and a popular spot called Catfish Point that draws anglers. The shallow bottom with a maximum depth of around 48 feet (15 meters) makes it particularly attractive for catching catfish and white bass.
