Call Field

Call Field was a military airfield in Wichita Falls that sprawled across approximately 700 acres with numerous buildings on site. The base included hangars, a hospital, and barracks arranged to accommodate hundreds of trainees and support staff.

The base was established in 1917 and served as a training facility for pilots and observers under the US Army Air Service during World War I. Operations ceased in 1919 after the conflict ended.

The facility was named after a local businessman and received strong backing from the community of Wichita Falls. Residents took pride in supporting this military effort during wartime, and many came to watch the training activities.

The site is located near Wichita Falls and is accessible by local roads. Be aware that few of the original structures remain standing today, so a guide or historical information on-site can help orient visitors.

Of the thousands of military personnel stationed here, 500 received their pilot wings before leaving. Tragically, 34 men died in training accidents, showing the dangers that early military aviation faced during the war.
