Mesquite, Suburban city in Dallas and Kaufman Counties, Texas
Mesquite is a suburban city in Dallas and Kaufman Counties, Texas, positioned at an elevation of 151 meters (495 feet). Four major highways cross through the area, including Interstate 30, 635, and 20, along with U.S. Route 80.
The Texas and Pacific Railway established a depot stop here in 1873, and station agent William Bradfield built the first settlement. The town grew from this small railway stop into a larger community over the following decades.
The city takes its name from mesquite trees that once grew throughout the region and still appear in local parks and neighborhoods. Residents gather at sports venues and community centers where rodeo traditions and family activities shape local life.
The highways make it easy to reach from Dallas and surrounding areas, with Interstate 30 offering the most direct route to downtown. Visitors find it best to have a car, as public transport options are limited.
The Texas State Legislature officially designated the city as Rodeo Capital of Texas in 1993, honoring its long rodeo traditions. This heritage continues in regular events and local recreation culture today.
