The Mahalia Jackson Theater of the Performing Arts contains 2,100 seats and features modern acoustic systems for concerts, theatrical performances, and dance productions.
The theater opened in January 1973 with Giuseppe Verdi's Messa da Requiem and underwent a $27 million renovation after sustaining damage from Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
The venue serves as the permanent home for the New Orleans Ballet Association and presents numerous Broadway touring productions throughout the performance season.
The theater maintains advanced technical capabilities for productions, including updated lighting and sound systems installed during the 2009 restoration project.
Following Hurricane Katrina, the facility endured 14 feet of floodwater, yet emerged as one of the first major venues to reopen in New Orleans in January 2009.
