Our Lady of Guadalupe Chapel, Catholic church in French Quarter, New Orleans, US

Our Lady of Guadalupe Chapel is the oldest surviving church building in New Orleans, built in 1827 on Rampart Street, with its rear bordering Basin Street and St. Louis Cemetery No. 1 directly behind it. The former Chapel of St. Anthony of Padua holds a St. Jude shrine with a relic to the left of the altar, a statue of St. Expedite, and a Marian grotto between the church and the adjacent rectory.

Built in 1827 as the Chapel of St. Anthony of Padua, a mortuary chapel for yellow fever victims, it stood near St. Louis Cemeteries #1 and #2 because exhalations from the dead were then thought to spread the disease. In 1918 Archbishop John Shaw invited the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate to revive the disused chapel, and they gave it its present name. In the 1930s answered prayers to St. Jude began the novenas and shrine that continue today.

The parish is predominantly African-American and holds a weekly Gospel Jazz Mass on Sunday mornings. In the 1930s parishioners praying to Saint Jude had their prayers answered, which began the regular novenas to Saint Jude that continue today. A shrine to Saint Jude stands to the left of the altar and holds a relic of the saint. The statue of Saint Expedite is visited by Catholics and by some local followers of Voodoo.

The church faces Rampart Street, with Basin Street running behind it and St. Louis Cemetery No. 1 directly across that rear street. The St. Jude Shrine stands to the left of the altar, and the Marian grotto lies between the church and the adjacent rectory. Sunday morning Gospel Jazz Mass is a weekly fixture, so visitors should plan around services at this active parish.
