1440 Canal, High-rise building in Medical District, New Orleans, US
1440 Canal is a modern high-rise building at the corner of Canal Street and LaSalle Street in downtown New Orleans with 24 regular floors. The building contains modern office spaces and administrative facilities for the university.
The building was constructed in 1971 as office space for Tidewater Marine and later donated to Tulane University in 1993. This change of hands marked a shift toward academic and administrative purposes.
The building houses the Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, where students and researchers work on health topics and tropical medicine today. The institution plays an important role in medical education and scientific work in the city.
The building is located in a central position at a major street intersection with elevators for easy movement between the many floors. Visitors should know that only lower floors are publicly accessible.
The building has two additional floors above the 24 marked stories that are smaller and accessible only from the 24th floor. These hidden spaces are an unexpected feature of the structure.
