TPC of Louisiana, Professional golf course in Avondale, US
TPC of Louisiana is a golf course in Avondale, Louisiana, built on wetland terrain near the Mississippi River Delta. The layout has 18 holes and weaves through areas of standing water and sand bunkers that come into play on nearly every hole.
Pete Dye designed the course with input from professionals Steve Elkington and Kelly Gibson, and it opened in 2004. From the start it joined the Tournament Players Club network, which connects it to other top-level courses across the country.
The Zurich Classic of New Orleans is played here every year and follows a team format, with two golfers competing together rather than individually, which sets it apart from most PGA Tour events. Fans can get close to the action on many holes, which gives the tournament a relaxed and approachable feel.
The course has five sets of tees, so golfers of different abilities can play the same layout at a length that suits them, from around 5,100 yards (4,700 m) up to about 7,400 yards (6,800 m). First-time visitors should be aware that water and sand come into play on most holes, so having extra balls on hand is a good idea.
The 18th hole runs with water along its entire right side, leaving almost no room for error on the approach, and it has decided the outcome of more than one professional tournament played here. Because the course sits on former wetlands, the ground beneath parts of it is still soft, which makes the course management particularly demanding after heavy rain.
