Central Grocery, Italian deli and restaurant in French Quarter, New Orleans, United States
Central Grocery is a traditional Italian deli and sandwich counter in the French Quarter on Decatur Street. The shop combines shelves of imported Italian goods with a counter where fresh sandwiches are made to order.
The shop was founded in 1906 by Salvatore Lupo and created the famous Muffuletta sandwich. This creation combined Sicilian bread with meats, cheese, and olive salad, becoming the place's defining dish ever since.
The shop keeps its original early 20th-century look, with wooden shelves and glass cases displaying Italian goods throughout. Visitors today experience the same setting that shaped how locals have gathered and eaten here for generations.
Visitors can order the signature Muffuletta sandwich in half or whole portions, ideal for sharing among several people. The space is compact and can get crowded during peak hours, so arriving early or visiting during quieter times works better.
The shop produces and packages its own distinctive olive salad for sale. This blend of green and black olives with vegetables and seasonings forms the heart of every Muffuletta sandwich and can be purchased separately.
