Mary Plantation House

Mary Plantation House is a French Colonial residence in Braithwaite situated near the Mississippi River banks with raised foundations, wide porches, and steep roofs that define its architectural character. The structure displays design features typical of the period, including adaptations made to the local climate and landscape.

The house was built in 1795 and enlarged in 1820, making it the oldest residence in Plaquemines Parish at that time. This expansion shows how the family adapted the structure as Louisiana communities developed.

The house reflects French Colonial building traditions and ways of life that shaped early Louisiana communities. You can see how the design responds to the local landscape and climate of the Mississippi River region.

The grounds cover about 1.5 acres and allow visitors to walk through and explore the architectural features up close. The setting along the river makes it pleasant to spend time observing the building and its surroundings.

A botanist from Tulane University purchased and restored the property in 1946, opening it to the public to preserve its history. His work saved this example of early Louisiana architecture from being lost.
