Alexander State Forest, State forest in Rapides Parish, Louisiana
Alexander State Forest is a state forest in Rapides Parish, Louisiana covering approximately 8,000 acres. The property includes bottomland hardwood forests and extensive southern yellow pine stands, along with the Indian Creek Recreation Area for visitors.
The forest was established in 1923 when Louisiana purchased 2,068 acres from Mrs. Elise Polk Burrows. It was named to honor M.L. Alexander, the state's first conservation commissioner.
The Alexander State Forest Headquarters Building, constructed in 1935, stands as a National Register of Historic Places structure within the forest grounds.
Visitors can hunt, fish, boat, swim, picnic, and camp in the Indian Creek Recreation Area. These facilities are spread across about three-quarters of the forest, offering varied activities depending on the season.
The Woodworth Fire Tower stands at 53 meters tall and is the tallest operational fire watch tower in North America. This structure offers a rare look at past forest monitoring methods that remain in use today.
