Van Dorn House, Federal style house in Port Gibson, United States

The Van Dorn House stands on a hilltop with two and a half floors, representing the Federal architectural style from the early nineteenth century.

Built around 1830 for Peter Van Dorn, the residence became the childhood home of Confederate Major General Earl Van Dorn during the American Civil War.

The residence documents early Mississippi territorial architecture and reflects the transition period between colonial and post-independence building methods in the American South.

The Historic American Buildings Survey maintains detailed architectural documentation, measurements, and photographs of the house at the Library of Congress.

During a military operation, Earl Van Dorn, who grew up in this house, captured General Grant's wife Julia and 1,500 Union soldiers at Holly Springs.
