The congregation originated in 1866 when 73 Black members left First Baptist Church, constructing this building in 1903 under architect Nathanial Sykes Allen.
The church maintains its position as a central gathering place for religious services and community activities in the St. Paul's Bottoms neighborhood.
The church conducts regular services and maintains historical records while offering guided tours of the building upon request.
A storm destroyed the initial construction of the building, leading to a complete rebuild that cost $3,198.45 in 1903.
