Yazoo, Principal river in western Mississippi, United States

The Yazoo is a river in Mississippi that flows about 188 miles through the state and joins the Mississippi River north of Vicksburg. Its waterway is managed by four reservoirs – Arkabutla, Enid, Sardis, and Grenada – which control water levels and prevent flooding across the basin.

French explorer La Salle named the river 'Rivière des Yazous' in 1682 after a Native American tribe that lived near its mouth. This name from the colonial era has persisted and remains central to how the river is known today.

The land between the Mississippi and this river shaped the Delta region, where cotton farming and blues music became deeply rooted in local life. These traditions remain woven into how communities here express themselves and celebrate their heritage.

The river can be accessed from various points along its course, especially near the reservoirs and larger towns like Jackson. Spring and fall offer the best conditions for visiting, with moderate weather and more stable water levels.

The river runs parallel to the Mississippi, and its unusual pattern led hydrologists to name any river with similar flow characteristics a 'Yazoo stream'. This distinctive feature makes it a classic example studied by scientists around the world.
