Overflow National Wildlife Refuge, National Wildlife Refuge in Ashley County, Arkansas.

Overflow National Wildlife Refuge is a wetland complex in southeastern Arkansas containing bottomland forests, water impoundments, and agricultural fields. The landscape features willow and overcup oak trees spread across several thousand acres.

The refuge was established in 1980 to protect one of the remaining bottomland forests essential for waterfowl in the Mississippi Flyway. This creation was part of larger efforts to restore critical habitats in the region.

The refuge maintains traditional wildlife management through controlled flooding that supports waterfowl during winter months. Visitors can observe how wetland areas are actively shaped to create habitats for different bird species.

The refuge is located approximately 25 kilometers southeast of Hamburg and can be accessed from State Highway 8. A contact station provides information and guidance for exploring the area.

During winter months, approximately 6500 acres of forest are intentionally flooded to create water reservoirs. These submerged woodlands attract mallards and wood ducks that come to feed and rest.
