Sweetbay Bogs Preserve, Protected nature area in Wiggins, Mississippi.
Sweetbay Bogs Preserve is a protected nature area spanning roughly 194 acres of hillside seepage bogs within the Pascagoula River watershed. The land hosts numerous sweetbay trees and many specialized plant species adapted to the wet, acidic conditions.
The land was purchased by the Mississippi Chapter of The Nature Conservancy in December 1989, marking the organization's first conservation land acquisition in the state. This early protection helped secure an important wetland ecosystem for the future.
The bogs draw visitors who want to understand how rare plant species thrive in these specific wetland conditions. People come to experience the ecosystem and learn about the plants adapted to this particular landscape.
Visits require advance appointments to protect the sensitive habitat and ensure visitors can safely navigate the wet conditions. Wearing appropriate footwear and clothing is wise, as the terrain is damp and swampy.
The site hosts eight documented rare plant species, including carnivorous plants and specialized species like grass of parnassus and bog spicebush. This unusual collection of uncommon species makes it a notable location for botanists and nature enthusiasts.
