The Veterans Administration operated this medical center from the 1920s until 2005, when Hurricane Katrina caused extensive damage leading to its closure.

The district's Spanish Colonial Revival architecture incorporates elements such as stucco walls, clay tile roofs, and ornamental details throughout the buildings.

The facility transformed into Centennial Plaza Resort in 2019, offering accommodations, dining establishments, and recreational facilities for visitors to Gulfport.

Originally planned as Mississippi's centennial celebration site in 1917, the location instead served as a Navy training facility during World War I.
