Biloxi Light, Cast iron lighthouse in Biloxi, United States.
Biloxi Light is a brick and cast iron lighthouse standing about 18.5 meters tall on a point near Mississippi Sound. The structure has a solid, compact appearance with its distinctive tower form rising above the surrounding waterfront area.
The lighthouse was built in 1848 following Congressional approval to aid ships navigating Mississippi Sound. It was manufactured by the Murray and Hazlehurst foundry in Baltimore and served as an important maritime navigation aid for generations.
The lighthouse sits on a public plaza right by the water, serving as a gathering point where locals and visitors pause to take in the view. Its position makes it a natural landmark that people use to orient themselves when exploring the waterfront.
The lighthouse is located at an easily accessible waterfront spot and can be reached from nearby streets without difficulty. The area around the tower provides plenty of space for walking around and viewing from different angles.
This lighthouse had female keepers for a longer period than any other lighthouse in America, with the Younghans family alone managing it for over six decades. This made the station an exceptional example of women serving in historical maritime roles.
