Magnolia Hotel, Historic hotel in Biloxi, United States.
The Magnolia Hotel is a historic building in downtown Biloxi featuring a 2.5-story brick structure with a French Colonial Center Hall design. The distinctive double-galleried wraparound porch with supporting posts defines its appearance and gives the structure its recognizable character.
The hotel was founded in 1847 by German immigrant John Hohn as the oldest surviving hotel building on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Following Hurricane Camille in 1972, community members preserved it by relocating the entire structure northward.
The building reflects connections between the Mississippi Coast and New Orleans through its architectural details and how local people have maintained it as a landmark. Visitors can see these regional ties expressed in the way the structure is designed and used today.
The building is located in downtown Biloxi and now operates as a restaurant serving traditional local food and cuisine. Visitors can view the architecture from outside and experience a meal featuring regional flavors if they choose to dine inside.
The building is a remarkable example of 19th-century Gulf Coast architecture and was physically moved about 150 meters in 1972 after a major storm. This preservation action shows how the community took dramatic steps to save an important structure from nature's destructive force.
