Brookley Aeroplex, Transportation and industrial complex in Mobile, Alabama, United States.
Brookley Aeroplex is an aviation and industrial complex in Mobile, Alabama, with two active runways capable of handling all common aircraft types. The grounds cover a wide area that includes manufacturing buildings, warehouses, and logistics facilities connected by road, rail, and waterway.
The site opened as a municipal airfield in 1929 and was taken over by the military in 1938. During World War II it became a major center for aircraft assembly, with thousands of workers employed on the grounds.
The site is home to companies in aviation, logistics, and manufacturing that employ many workers from the Mobile area on a daily basis. Driving past, you can see large warehouses, hangars, and rail lines connecting the different operations across the grounds.
The complex can be reached from Interstate 10 via the Michigan Avenue or Broad Street exits. Since it is an active industrial and aviation facility, many parts of the grounds are not open to the general public without prior arrangement.
Airbus opened an assembly line here in 2015 for the A320 family, making Mobile the only place in the United States where passenger jets of that class are built in series. The factory is one of the very few Airbus production sites outside Europe.
