Vickers and Schumacher Buildings
Vickers and Schumacher Buildings, Commercial buildings in downtown Mobile, Alabama.
The Vickers and Schumacher Buildings are two brick commercial structures featuring Italian-style arches and decorative moldings across their facades. Each building stands two stories tall with evenly spaced openings that once served as storefronts and warehouse access points.
These structures were constructed in 1866 during the period when Mobile was rebuilding its economy after the Civil War. The Schumacher Carriage Works initially operated from these buildings before later merchants adapted them to different commercial uses.
These structures reflect the working life of mid-19th century merchants and craftspeople who operated from such multi-story commercial spaces. The layout shows how business owners combined storage, workspace, and storefronts in single buildings during that era.
These buildings sit on Dauphin Street in downtown Mobile where most visitors can easily spot them while walking the historic district. The location makes them convenient to visit as part of a broader exploration of the area's older commercial architecture.
A restoration project completed in 2005 brought back many original craftsmanship details that had been obscured over decades. This work demonstrated how careful intervention can revive a historic structure while keeping its essential character intact.
