Scottish Rite Temple
Scottish Rite Temple, Masonic temple in Mobile, United States.
The Scottish Rite Temple is a Masonic temple in Mobile designed in Egyptian Revival style, featuring two sphinx sculptures flanking the east entrance and two obelisks rising from the roof. The architecture combines monumental Egyptian forms with classical proportions, creating a distinctive structure that stands apart from its surroundings.
The temple was designed and opened in 1922 by architect George Bigelow Rogers as an example of Egyptian Revival style in the early 1920s. It was later added to the National Register of Historic Places, recognizing its importance as a significant example of this architectural movement.
The building functions as a Masonic gathering place and hosts community events, maintaining strong ties to fraternal traditions through its spaces. The interior layout reflects this dual purpose of ceremony and public use.
The temple is located downtown in Mobile and is easy to spot thanks to its distinctive Egyptian architecture and prominent vertical elements. Visitors should expect that access may be limited depending on scheduled events or private functions.
The facades feature massively constructed towers shaped like Egyptian pylons, inspired by the Bab el'Adb Gate at Karnak Temple in Egypt. This unusual interpretation of Egyptian architecture shows how Masonic organizations in the 1920s integrated historical symbols into their own buildings.
