Choctaw National Wildlife Refuge, National Wildlife Refuge in Choctaw County, Alabama, US

Choctaw National Wildlife Refuge occupies a large area of forest and water along the Tombigbee River, with lakes, sloughs, and creeks winding through the landscape. The land consists mainly of bottomland hardwood forest in a flat river valley, creating varied habitats for different species.

The refuge was established in 1964 by the Corps of Engineers as part of the Coffeeville Lock and Dam construction project. This development brought together water management infrastructure and wildlife protection on the same land.

The refuge honors the Choctaw people through its name and serves as a vital space where local bird and animal populations can live safely. This connection to the region's indigenous roots becomes visible as you observe the wildlife thriving throughout the protected lands.

Much of the refuge can only be reached by boat since the river system limits road access throughout the area. Visitors should prepare for wet conditions and bring appropriate clothing to handle the damp environment.

The refuge runs a managed nest box program that helps around 2,500 wood ducks hatch each year. This focused effort demonstrates how active management can grow populations of a specific bird species, and visitors can witness these results while watching birds.
