Cantonment Clinch, Military fortification in West Pensacola, Florida.
Cantonment Clinch is a military fortification built at the head of Bayou Chico in West Pensacola. The fort contained ten log barracks and ten officer residences arranged around a central parade ground where troops conducted daily military operations.
Colonel George M. Brooke established the fortification in 1822 during the First Seminole War. The site was created to house troops relocating due to a yellow fever epidemic that threatened other garrisons.
The settlement surrounding the fort housed Creek, European, and African residents who lived together in close quarters. This mix of people created a layered community where different traditions coexisted in daily life.
Troops occupied separate log housing units according to 1821 military building regulations, with accommodations divided among nine companies. Visitors should know that the wooden construction required continuous upkeep in the humid coastal climate.
The Post Surgeon recorded detailed weather observations starting in 1822 that were contributed to the Army Meteorological Register. This scientific data collection from a remote military outpost provided early climate information for the region.
