McKinley Climatic Laboratory, laboratory in Valparaiso, Florida
McKinley Climatic Laboratory is a testing facility built inside a converted hangar at Eglin Air Force Base, near Valparaiso, Florida. The building houses large chambers where temperature, wind, snow, and rain can be controlled to simulate almost any climate on earth.
The facility was built shortly after World War II, when the US military recognized that equipment often failed in extreme weather. Over the following decades, it was expanded and gradually opened to civilian and commercial testing as well.
The laboratory takes its name from President William McKinley, though he had no direct connection to the facility itself. The name is recognized locally, and the site has become a reference point in the area's identity as a hub for military research.
The laboratory sits inside a secured military base and is not open to the general public without prior authorization. Anyone with a specific reason to visit should contact the base in advance, as access requires approval.
The chambers inside the laboratory are large enough to fit entire aircraft and full-size military vehicles for testing. This means engineers can observe how a whole machine behaves in extreme cold or heat, not just its individual parts.
