Court Square Historic District, historic district in Alabama, United States

Court Square Historic District is a historic district in Montgomery, Alabama, featuring closely spaced buildings of various styles built primarily in brick from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The architecture displays mainly the Italianate style with tall windows and decorative brackets, mixed with late Victorian and revival styles from the 1900s.

The area developed from the late 19th century onward as Montgomery's business and legal center, with buildings serving as shops, offices, and residences. The district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982, with boundaries expanded shortly after to recognize its importance to local history.

The square served as the heart of public life in Montgomery for generations, drawing residents and visitors from across the region to gather and conduct business. Today, visitors can still sense this social importance through the central fountain, which has functioned as a meeting point since 1885.

The area is best explored on foot since the streets are tightly spaced and free of large modern buildings, allowing the old architecture to remain the focus. As you walk around, notice the small plaques and signs next to some buildings that provide brief historical information.

The district center is anchored by a fountain built in 1885 that has served as a social gathering point for nearly 150 years. This modestly designed fountain has proven to be one of the enduring symbols of public space in the area and continues to draw people together.
