Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta Birmingham Branch
Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta Birmingham Branch, Federal Reserve branch building in downtown Birmingham, United States
The Federal Reserve building at 1801 Fifth Avenue North is a marble and limestone structure that spans about 104,000 square feet and combines Colonial Revival and Art Deco architectural features. The structure contains multiple floors with detailed craftsmanship visible in its exterior stonework and interior finishes.
The building was designed by architect A. J. Krebs in 1926 and gained National Register of Historic Places status in 2003. The recognition acknowledged its role as both a financial institution and an architectural example from the early 20th century.
The building stands as a key landmark in downtown Birmingham's financial and civic identity, reflecting how businesses and institutions shaped the city's character during the early 20th century. Its classical design continues to define the character of the surrounding streetscape for those who pass by today.
The building is located downtown and serves as an easy landmark to find along Fifth Avenue North. It remains an active location with various businesses operating inside, making it a functioning part of the city center that visitors can approach from surrounding streets.
During construction, workers had to manage continuous groundwater that flowed beneath the downtown site, requiring extensive pumping throughout the building process. This underground challenge shaped how the foundation was engineered to withstand the wet conditions.
