Lourdes SIGINT station, Military intelligence station in Havana Province, Cuba.
Lourdes SIGINT station is a former Soviet military facility in Havana Province equipped with large satellite dishes and radio receivers. The installation was designed to monitor radio broadcasts, telephone calls, and data transmissions occurring across the Atlantic Ocean.
The Soviet Union built this station in 1962 at the height of Cold War tensions as a strategic listening post. Operations ceased in 2002 following the collapse of the Soviet Union and changing geopolitical relationships in the region.
At peak capacity, over 1,500 Russian and Cuban personnel collaborated within the station, forming a specialized international intelligence community.
The site is located in a remote area and is not open to casual visitors. The decaying condition of the buildings means viewing the installation from a distance is the only safe option.
The station supplied roughly three-quarters of the strategic intelligence Moscow received about the United States during the Cold War. This made it one of the most valuable surveillance facilities the Soviets operated outside their own territory.
