Matanzas Province

Matanzas Province covers 11,798 square kilometers of mostly flat terrain, with numerous beaches along its northern coast and wetlands in the south.

The province developed as a major sugar production center during the colonial period, with 21 sugar mills processing the local sugarcane harvests.

The province maintains strong African and Spanish cultural influences, particularly visible in the creation of rumba dance at the Teatro Sauto.

The region contains many petroleum facilities, industrial complexes, and the tourist destination of Varadero with its extensive hotel infrastructure.

The Ciénaga de Zapata wetlands in the southern part of Matanzas form the largest swamp system in the Caribbean region.
