Matanzas Province

Matanzas is a province in western Cuba with mostly flat terrain, numerous beaches along the northern coast, and wetlands in the south. The region stretches across diverse landscapes and includes well-known coastal destinations.

The province developed as a major sugar production center during the colonial period, with numerous mills processing local sugarcane. This agricultural tradition shaped the region's economy and growth for centuries.

The province reflects African and Spanish heritage through its music, dance traditions, and local celebrations that shape daily life today. These influences appear in street festivities and community gatherings throughout the region.

The region contains industrial facilities, petroleum operations, and the tourist hub of Varadero with extensive accommodation options. Visitors can access beaches and natural areas throughout the province.

The Ciénaga de Zapata forms one of the largest wetland systems in the Caribbean and stretches across the southern part of the province. This natural reserve is home to rare bird species and wildlife found nowhere else in the region.
