The site began as a house built in 1880 by John James Felton, one of the first Chelsea Pensioners to arrive on the islands. Part of that original 1880s structure was preserved and integrated into the building that stands here today.

The hotel's 35 rooms are each named after a place in the islands, and the pictures in them are landscapes of those places painted by the local artist Richard Cockwell. The building takes its name from Malvina, John James Felton's daughter born in 1881; Malvina is an old Scottish name.

The hotel stands at 3 Ross Road, on the southern shore of Stanley harbour, a short walk from the town centre along the waterfront road. Its 35 rooms are each named after a site in the islands, and the restaurant occupies the part of the old building kept when the rest was demolished.

The in-house cinema with around 55 seats is an uncommon feature in this remote location. This private cinema gives guests and locals access to films in a place where such facilities are rarely found.
