Feria de Mataderos, Traditional fair in Argentina
Feria de Mataderos is a weekly market in southern Buenos Aires where crafts, food, and handmade goods are sold. The fairgrounds fill with vendor stalls on Sundays, and there are areas where horsemen display their animals and skills.
The market was established in 1986 to preserve gaucho traditions and rural life in Argentina. Over the years it grew and attracted more visitors interested in exploring local culture.
The name comes from the slaughterhouse that once operated in this neighborhood. Today you can see gauchos dressed in traditional clothes demonstrating their skills, and people gathering to celebrate their connection to this way of life.
The market opens on Sundays and is best visited in the morning when most stalls are in full operation. The area is accessible by public transport, and wear comfortable shoes since you will be walking around for hours.
The fairgrounds are known for the Carrera de Sortijas, a traditional horseman's game where riders try to spear small rings suspended on a line. This is an old gaucho skill rarely seen elsewhere.
