Quebrada del Barro Formation, Geological formation in San Juan Province, Argentina
The Quebrada del Barro Formation is a geological layer in the Marayes-El Carrizal Basin made up of red sandstones, siltstones, and fine conglomerates. These rocks extend down to depths between 600 and 1,400 meters.
This layer formed during the Late Triassic period through sedimentary deposits in a rift basin with alluvial fans and river systems. These complex environments created the rock structures we see today.
Scientists and researchers from multiple nations conduct regular expeditions to the formation to study its paleontological treasures and geological characteristics.
Access to this site requires knowledge of local research routes and geological expertise. Visitors interested in the formation should contact nearby research institutions for guidance and current conditions.
The rocks here contain fossils of early giant sauropodomorph dinosaurs like Ingentia from the Norian stage. These discoveries rank among the oldest known examples of such massive creatures and reveal how they first emerged.
