Granja de Pedras Altas, Medieval castle in Pedras Altas, Brazil.
Granja de Pedras Altas is a stone castle with medieval architectural elements located in the southern municipality. The building features towers and contains a library of approximately 15,000 books and documents within its stone walls.
The castle was built between 1909 and 1913 by diplomat Joaquim Francisco de Assis Brasil and represented European nobility influence in the Brazilian countryside. Its construction reflected the connection between European culture and the growing Brazilian upper class.
The castle houses an extensive book collection that reflects the intellectual interests of early 20th century Brazilian diplomacy. The rooms show how education and knowledge shaped the lives of the elites during that period.
The castle is currently closed to visitors as major restoration work is ongoing, which began in August 2023. Visitors should check the current status before planning a trip and consider returning once the work is completed.
After restoration, the castle will be transformed into an ecomuseum offering a new visitor experience. This conversion will blend the site's history with modern environmental themes and create a new chapter in the building's use.
