Linhares extends across 3,496 square kilometers of coastal terrain, containing numerous freshwater lagoons and the Doce River flowing through its territory.
The settlement began in 1800 with a military post to protect river navigation, receiving its name from Dom Rodrigo de Sousa Coutinho, a Brazilian government minister.
