Ellis Park Stadium, Sports stadium in Doornfontein, South Africa.
Ellis Park Stadium is a multipurpose sports venue in Doornfontein, South Africa, used for both rugby and football. The facility features several tiers with a main grandstand on the west side and an opposing east stand.
The arena was built between 1927 and 1928 and opened as a major venue for the growing sports scene in Johannesburg. The stadium hosted the 1995 Rugby World Cup Final between South Africa and New Zealand.
The stadium carries a sponsored name today but locals still refer to it by the surrounding neighborhood. On match days the streets around fill with fans wearing club colors making their way to kickoff.
The grounds sit near Doornfontein Station with regular connections to central Johannesburg. Bus lines also stop nearby and offer passengers an alternative to arriving by rail.
In 2005 the arena became the first stadium in South Africa under Black ownership. This change marked a turning point in the history of South African sports infrastructure after the end of apartheid.
