Cascade de Bras Rouge, Mountain waterfall in Cilaos, Réunion.
Cascade de Bras Rouge is a waterfall that drops from high cliffs within the Cilaos mountain cirque, flowing over dark volcanic rock faces shaped by ancient lava. The water collects in pools surrounded by thick forest and steep terrain.
The path to the waterfall once served as the main connection between the settlement of Marla and Cilaos village for local inhabitants. The construction of road D242 in the 1970s changed this, reducing the trail's role in daily travel.
The waterfall forms part of the Grand Raid running competition route, highlighting its integration into Réunion's sporting traditions.
Wear sturdy hiking boots for this trek, as the trail has steep sections and requires several hours of walking. Bring plenty of water and plan to spend most of a day on the route, as the path winds through forest and gains significant elevation.
The polished lava surfaces along the trail become extremely slippery when wet, creating a hazard that many visitors underestimate. Careful footing is essential throughout the hike due to these smooth rock formations.
