Roche Merveilleuse

Roche Merveilleuse is a rock outcrop at 1,437 meters (4,715 feet) elevation that rises above Cilaos village and offers panoramic 360-degree views. From this spot, visitors see the entire amphitheater-like valley, steep mountain walls, and the small houses of the village nestled below.

The outcrop formed through volcanic activity that shaped Réunion Island, creating this elevated viewpoint. Over time, the rock was sculpted by weather and the valley below was carved by erosion into its present amphitheater shape.

The name 'Roche Merveilleuse' means 'Marvelous Rock' and refers to local traditions where women came seeking fertility blessings. Visitors today can feel how this old belief still gives the outcrop a special place in local stories and memory.

The viewpoint has a parking area and picnic zones with kiosks where visitors can rest and enjoy a meal. An orientation table explains the main landmarks and helps guests identify the mountain peaks and valley areas they see around them.

A botanical trail near the viewpoint showcases native plant species found only on the island, including tall evergreen trees and endemic varieties. The path offers visitors a chance to discover the island's special vegetation while exploring the surroundings.
