Piton de Bébour, Mountain summit in Saint-Benoît, Réunion.
Piton de Bébour is a mountain summit reaching about 1473 meters on eastern Réunion island in the Indian Ocean, surrounded by a state-managed forest. The peak sits on volcanic rock within an area shaped by ancient eruptions that created the surrounding plateau.
The peak formed from the final eruptions of Piton des Neiges roughly 20000 years ago, which filled an earlier valley. This volcanic activity shaped the surrounding terrain and created the plateau where the mountain stands today.
The trail passes through forest with rare orchids and plants found nowhere else on earth. These native species shape how the landscape looks as you walk around the peak.
A circular trail of about 2.4 kilometers goes around the mountain but becomes muddy and slippery after rain. Sturdy footwear and caution during wet weather are important for safe walking.
The mountain is monitored by a volcanology observatory that tracks geological changes and collects data on the volcano. Visitors walk on a trail that passes through an area under scientific observation.
