Shipstern Bluff

Shipstern Bluff is a surf spot in southeastern Tasmania where waves break over sharp rock reefs, creating intense walls of water. The location sits on a remote coastline and is difficult to access, which keeps visitor numbers low.

The spot was first discovered by professional surfers in the 1990s and quickly gained attention within the global surf community. Since then, it has become a legendary destination for experienced surfers.

The break here draws serious surfers from around the world who come specifically to challenge themselves against something raw and unforgiving. Locals speak of this place as a proving ground where surfing is stripped down to its purest form.

Getting there is demanding: you'll need either a jet ski or must hike two hours through Tasman National Park. Winter offers the best surfing conditions, though the water is cold and currents run strong.

The wave has a distinctive feature called The Steps, where multiple levels appear within the wave face as it breaks. This unusual pattern makes every attempt here an unpredictable challenge.
