Butterleaf National Park, Nature reserve in Glen Innes Severn Council, Australia.
Butterleaf National Park is a nature reserve spanning around 3000 hectares of protected land, featuring old growth forests with large trees and numerous animal habitats. The forests along the Great Dividing Range display the typical vegetation found in this mountainous region of Australia.
The reserve was established in 1999 by the New South Wales government to protect the forest ecosystems in this region. The decision to safeguard this land reflected recognition of these forest types' importance for biodiversity.
The forest serves as a research site for ecological studies, helping people understand Australian native wildlife and forest management. Visitors can observe this work directly as they walk through the marked trails.
Visitors will find a car park near the information shelter, from which several walking trails lead into the forest. A former log dump area provides space for camping if you bring your own tent and equipment.
The park houses an isolated population of wombats and provides habitat for spotted-tailed quolls that live in hollow logs and tree cavities. These rare marsupials are hard to spot, but their tracks and burrows indicate a healthy forest ecosystem.
