Moreton Central Sugar Mill, Sugar mill complex in Nambour, Australia
Moreton Central Sugar Mill was a sugar factory in Nambour that operated a large railway network stretching across multiple locations in the region. The system connected farms to the mill and enabled cane transport across considerable distances.
The mill was established in 1894 and began operations in 1897 as part of government legislation to support the sugar industry. It became a major economic force for Nambour and coastal Queensland for decades.
Worker housing developed around the facility shows how the mill shaped daily life in the region. The preserved cottages reflect the tight relationship between the factory and the local community.
The original site is now Nambour Mill Village shopping complex, which replaced the old factory building. For those interested in history, the Nambour Historical Museum displays locomotives that once operated here.
The mill operated steam locomotives well into the 1980s before gradually switching to diesel engines. Several of these historic engines are still preserved and on display, showing how industrial transport technology evolved.
