Basilica Menor de San Francisco de Asis, Baroque Catholic church in La Habana Vieja, Cuba.
The Basilica Menor de San Francisco de Asis is a Baroque church in Old Havana with three large naves supported by twelve columns. A 42-meter bell tower rises above the structure and overlooks the surrounding plaza.
Construction began in 1548 as part of early colonial Havana. Major renovations between 1731 and 1738 gave the building its current Baroque style before it received minor basilica status in 1739.
The church now houses a museum displaying religious objects collected over centuries. Concerts and cultural events held here bring music and gatherings into the sacred space.
The building is open to visitors on most weekdays, with limited hours on Sundays. Guided tours are available and help you understand the architecture and collections inside.
A bronze statue of El Caballero de Paris stands at the entrance, honoring José María López Lledín, a legendary local figure. The statue has become a gathering point that locals and visitors alike pass by regularly.
