Guanabo, Beach town in Havana, Cuba

Guanabo is a beach town along the Atlantic coast near Havana, featuring small villas and low-rise hotels clustered near the Guanabo River mouth. The shoreline offers sandy beaches with shallow waters, backed by modest residential and commercial buildings typical of Cuban coastal settlements.

The settlement was founded in 1800 and experienced the suppression of the Peñas Altas uprising by Havana troops in 1827. This conflict was a defining moment in the town's early development and its ties to the capital.

The town preserves Cuban traditions through local markets, small restaurants serving regional dishes, and regular community gatherings featuring music and dance performances. Visitors can experience how locals live and celebrate together in this quieter seaside setting.

The town sits about 20 minutes east of central Havana and offers various accommodation options ranging from beachfront properties to residential rentals. Essential services and amenities are within walking distance from most areas, making it easy to navigate on foot.

The shallow waters and sandy beaches make this location particularly welcoming for beginning swimmers and families with children. Its position between Havana and Santa Cruz del Norte offers a less crowded alternative to more famous beaches in the region.

Visit Cuba: nature, history, and colonial heritage

Cuba combines colonial architecture, tropical landscapes and centuries-old fortifications. From the tobacco fields of Viñales Valley to the colonial towns of Trinidad and Havana, and the waterfalls of Soroa, the island displays its history and natural diversity. The Spanish colonial period left behind fortresses, palaces and cobblestone streets in historic centers. National parks protect karst formations, rainforests and coastal areas. Along the coast lie beaches with turquoise waters and coral reefs. The route passes through different regions of the island, from the mountains of Sierra Maestra to the cayos off the northern coast. Each location shows a different aspect of Cuban culture and nature, whether in the streets of Santiago de Cuba or in the caves of Bellamar.
