San Carlos de la Cabaña Fortress, Colonial military fortress in Havana, Cuba
San Carlos de la Cabaña Fortress is a colonial military structure on the eastern side of Havana Bay with thick defensive walls and bastions. It spans a large site with multiple levels, barrack areas, and observation points overlooking the water.
Construction of the fortress began in 1763 after British forces briefly held Havana in 1762 and exposed weaknesses in Spanish defenses. The structure was completed to strengthen the city's protection against future attacks.
The fortress houses a museum of fortifications and weapons displaying historical armaments from ancient times through the colonial period.
The site is large, so visitors should wear comfortable shoes and allow time to explore different areas. Many sections offer shade, but sun exposure can be strong, particularly in the afternoon.
Each evening, performers in historical uniforms conduct a traditional cannon-firing ceremony that reenacts 18th-century military ritual. This regular performance draws crowds of spectators.
