Hellshire Beach, Sandy beach in St. Catherine, Jamaica
Hellshire Beach is a sandy shore on the south coast of Jamaica, in Saint Catherine Parish, lined with rustic wooden fish shacks built directly on the sand. The shacks sit close together along the waterfront, each with its own grill, cooler of fresh catch, and a handful of plastic chairs and tables for diners.
The area started as a fishing settlement where families processed and shared their daily catch on the shore. As fishing became more organized, locals began selling cooked fish directly to visitors, and the beach gradually took on its current shape as an open-air seafood spot.
On weekends the beach fills with Jamaican families who come specifically to eat fried fish and festival, a fried dough typical of the island. The smell of frying food and the sound of reggae music in the background give the place a very local feel.
The sand gets everywhere, so simple shoes or bare feet work best here. Arriving on a weekday rather than a weekend means fewer people and a more relaxed meal, since the place gets very busy on Saturdays and Sundays.
At each shack you choose your own fish directly from a cooler before it is cooked, which is standard practice here but rarely found on other Caribbean beaches. The fish most often on offer is snapper or parrotfish, both caught the same morning a short distance offshore.
