Miami Terrace Reef, Deep-water coral reef off the Florida coast, United States.
Miami Terrace Reef is a deep-water coral ecosystem situated off the Florida coast in the Atlantic Ocean. It spans across a limestone shelf formation stretching from South Miami to Boca Raton and lies at depths between 650 and 2000 feet (200-600 meters).
Research teams from the University of Miami conducted detailed surveys of the reef during the 1970s, collecting samples of deep-sea organisms. These early studies established the foundation for understanding this remote coral ecosystem.
The reef serves as an educational resource for marine scientists studying deep-sea coral ecosystems and their adaptation to extreme depths.
The reef is located approximately 15 miles (24 km) offshore in depths requiring specialized diving equipment and advanced training. Access is restricted to scientific expeditions and specialized dive operators experienced with deep-water conditions.
The reef hosts dense populations of wreckfish and barrelfish alongside rare species of Lophelia pertusa coral that thrive under extreme pressure. These cold-adapted corals function entirely differently from tropical species and display remarkable survival mechanisms.
