Moncada Barracks, Educational complex in Santiago de Cuba, Cuba.
The Ciudad Escolar 26 de Julio is an educational complex in Santiago de Cuba that emerged from the former Moncada Barracks building. The complex includes 14 educational institutions and three childcare centers, now visited daily by thousands of students and staff.
The military building was constructed in 1943 under the government of Fulgencio Batista and served as an important army base. On July 26, 1953, a group led by Fidel Castro attacked the barracks, marking the beginning of the revolution.
The name Ciudad Escolar 26 de Julio recalls the 1953 attack, which holds deep symbolic meaning in Cuban society. Teachers and students use the preserved exhibition areas as places of learning and remembrance of that time.
Access is limited during school hours, as this remains an active educational institution. Visitors should check in advance for viewing hours and respect the ongoing use as a school.
In the western section there is an organic farm that grows food for the 3,500 people who study and work here. The harvest from this garden contributes directly to the daily supply of the institution.
