Boca Grande, Barrier island residential community in Lee County, Florida
Boca Grande is a residential settlement on Gasparilla Island in Florida, known for its Gulf of Mexico beaches and undeveloped coastal stretches along the island. The community spreads across the middle and northern parts of the island, while the southern end is marked by a historic lighthouse.
Phosphate discoveries near Punta Gorda in 1885 led to the construction of a port and rail line that developed the southern end of the island. The port remained a major shipping point for mineral resources until the mid-20th century.
The Boca Grande Art Alliance Exhibition presents works from regional artists in annual showcases that highlight Florida's coastal themes and maritime influences.
Visitors reach the island via a causeway or ferry service and move around the community mostly by golf cart. The lighthouse at the southern tip is accessible by road along the coastal route.
The natural depth of Boca Grande Pass made it one of the few harbors in Florida capable of receiving large cargo ships without dredging. Today anglers mainly use the pass because of the currents that draw fish into the area.
