Safety Harbor Site, Archaeological site in Safety Harbor, US
Safety Harbor Site is an archaeological site featuring a temple mound within Philippe Park. The mound is roughly 150 feet across and 20 feet tall, with post holes marking where structures once stood on top.
The site served as the capital of the Tocobaga people until European contact led to population decline around 1700. The loss of people forced the abandonment of this major center.
The temple mound reveals alternating layers of shells and sand, showing the construction methods of the Tocobaga people. These materials were gathered and stacked to create a sacred space for ceremonies and gatherings.
Philippe Park is accessible during daylight hours and offers walking paths around the site. Signs along the trails explain what you are seeing and help you understand the history.
This site shows the southernmost expression of Mississippian cultural influences in Florida, visible in the pottery styles of the Tocobaga. This distinctive characteristic helps archaeologists understand how far these cultural connections reached.
